There’s a quote I keep coming back to: "We don't miss the past because everything was perfect. We miss it because it was the first time we experienced so many things." Maybe that's why old movies, songs, or even the sound of an old ringtone can hit us so hard. They don't just remind us of a story. They remind us of who we were when we first heard that song, watched that film, or dreamed about the future without knowing what adulthood would bring. As kids, everything felt bigger. Summer vacations seemed endless. Waiting a week for the next TV episode felt exciting instead of frustrating. We fell in love with characters, believed people stayed together forever, and thought life would somehow make sense when we grew up. Looking back, it wasn't a perfect time. It was simply a time when everything was new. Maybe that's why nostalgia feels bittersweet. We aren't trying to go back to the past, we're grieving the version of ourselves who experienced those moments for the very first time. And I think that's something worth honoring, not because it's gone, but because it helped shape who we are today.
