Icarus and his father, Daedalus, were imprisoned on the island of Crete by King Minos. To escape, Daedalus built two pairs of wings using feathers held together with wax.

Before they flew away, Daedalus warned Icarus not to fly too low, because the sea's moisture would weigh down the wings, and not too high, because the sun's heat would melt the wax.

At first, Icarus followed his father's instructions. But he became excited by the thrill of flying and soared higher and higher. The sun melted the wax holding his wings together, the feathers fell away, and Icarus plunged into the sea and drowned.

The myth teaches that overconfidence, pride, and ignoring good advice can lead to disaster. It also reminds us that freedom should be balanced with wisdom and self-control.
